We obtained the summary statistics for the human gut microbiome from a recent meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) [21]. The meta-analysis included 18,340 participants from 24 different cohorts. More information about this study can be found elsewhere [21]. In summary, the study combined data from various countries such as the USA, Canada, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Finland, and the UK. It integrated 16S rRNA gene sequencing profiles and genotyping data and performed association analyses while adjusting for factors like age, sex, technical covariates, and genetic principal components [21]. Since our study utilized publicly available summary data, there was no need for additional ethics approval or participant consent.
