Supramolecular hybrid hydrogels (SHHs) are made by combining inorganic components with the host-guest chemistry of organic compounds. The SHHs have four components: custom-designed cationic copolymers (CPs), cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]) molecules, clay nanosheets (CNSs) stabilized with sodium polyacrylate (SPA), and a dissolution agent (DSA). CB[7] is selected due to its high water solubility and low cytotoxicity, while CNSs are included for their ability to improve mechanical strength. The CP is made up of hydrophilic acrylamide segments and positively charged quaternary amine MATMAC segments, which bind with CB[7] through host-guest interaction to create supramolecular crosslinks. The CP also binds with SPA-coated clay through electrostatic interactions to form a well-dispersed, homogeneous nanocomposite that leads to enhanced mechanical properties. The SHH is synthesized simply by mixing two aqueous solutions containing the components, and can be dissolved using DSA by breaking the physical crosslinks between CP and CB[7].
