A proxy is a server that acts as an intermediary between a client and another server. When a client requests resources from another server, the request is first sent to the proxy server which then sends the request on behalf of the client to the target server. The target server responds to the proxy server which then forwards the response back to the client. Proxies are commonly used for security, caching, and filtering purposes. They can be used to hide one’s IP address, bypass content restrictions or speed up internet browsing by caching frequently accessed web pages.
