This section explains the inclusion criteria for studies in the analysis, which requires a split-sample design with at least two treatments, a control group without CT and a CT treatment group, and reporting of economic value estimates. The Cheap Talk-Calibration Factor (CTCF) is defined as the ratio of an economic value obtained in the CT treatment to a corresponding value in the control group. Three steps were taken to identify potential articles, resulting in 419 articles examined and documented in an appendix. Some studies that did not report significant effects of CT were still included by assigning equal WTP values to both groups. Coding for variables and studies followed best practices and involved consulting working papers or early versions of studies when necessary. Some coding decisions were difficult due to variations in study goals and methods, but transparency was maintained through listing default coding strategies, omitted information, example studies, and systematic circumstances in an appendix.
In order for a study to be included in our analysis, it must include split-sample/between respondent design of at least two treatments, 1) a control group that implements no CT, and 2) a CT treatment group. As well, the study must report economic ...
