There is a long-standing debate about the importance of international competitions for a nation, with conflicting views on whether some countries ought to spend more money on school sports, rather than support their competitors to participate in the Olympic Games, football World Cup and other major competitions. In my opinion, I totally agree with this statement.
Admittedly, the honor of winning influential sports competitions is essential for the majority of countries and indeed brings some benefits to social betterment. For example, when Argentina, which had suffered from economic crisis and military failure with England, won the World Cup in 1982, it recovered the confidence of its people and stimulated the local economy.
However, governments should not spend too much money on sports competitions because the financial revenue is limited and should be used for more valuable aspects. As compared to investing in global sports competitions, social members can obtain more direct rewards, especially by improving the quality of life and promoting physical health when authorities pour more money into constructing more sports facilities in schools and communities. For example, Bill Gates and his foundation have spent over 10 billion dollars building countless fitness centers, football fields, and so on, in Africa, making over one million children accessible to scientific and regular exercises. Consequently, the health conditions of adolescents are better than in the past, and life expectancy is prolonged.
In conclusion, although it is reasonable to give financial support to global competitions, I am also convinced that governments should spend more on encouraging children to join sports from a young age. This is because the latter measure has more favorable advantages in the long run.
