The aim of this study is to gain a better understanding of how gender norms, roles, and practices are influenced by language socialization. The research questions/hypotheses suggest that perceptions of gender in family, work, and education mediate the relationship between nationality and gender norms/roles in L2 classroom interaction. The study uses a mixed-methods approach with quantitative analysis of 281 Asian international students and narratives from female and male students to explore the impact of learning English on their gender perceptions and practices in the classroom. The findings reveal that family and L1 socialization play a central role in shaping equitable understandings of gender, while cultural variability in L1 socialization influences English classroom interactions. The study also highlights the important role that English plays in Asian female students’ cultural and professional aspirations within L2 academic contexts. It suggests that there is a need for higher education institutions to address students’ awareness of gender issues within L2 educational settings.
