In order to determine whether periodontal attachment loss is related to age or aging, we conducted a comparison of participants in four groups, each experiencing progressive loss of periodontal attachment. We found that those in the normal control group had the highest level of serum Klotho, while serum Klotho levels decreased progressively in the other three groups with attachment loss. Interestingly, there were no significant differences in age among the three groups with progressive attachment loss (as shown in Table 1), which indicates that other factors may be involved in severe attachment loss. Using multiple regression analysis adjusted for various factors including age, PIR, body mass index, gender, race and education, our results demonstrated that the relationship between periodontal attachment loss and age was nonlinear as evidenced by generalized weighted additive models and smoothed curves. These findings suggest that further investigation is needed to better understand the mechanisms underlying periodontal attachment loss and aging-related processes.
